Introduction to Conversions

Next topic, Conversions.

Where have you heard of that word.. Conversions. Hm, again, familiar isn't it? Ina guessed that you are already tired of her telling how everything seems familiar. No worries, She will stop.. Kidding, She won't. But remember that time of you finally realised how easy the formulas are? Yep. Ina has been there and done that.

But hey, Conversion is a change in the form of measurement, units BUT without the change in size or amount.

It can be in terms of Mass, Length and Capacity.

Remember that formula of these three subtopics that looks like a butterfly that has too many wings going up and down? Yes. It is like that. I mean, for Ina. You still don't get it? Fine. You know that one where when you change km to m and basically just multiply them by 1000.. and you draw an arrow going down and it looks like wings.. Yes.. Now you get it? Good.

So now, let us focus on Mass.

What is Mass you say?  Well, Mass is a scientific measure of the amount of matter an object is made up of. Mass is also often confused as Weight. It is basically mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object and weight is the amount of force that gravity has on an object.

For Mass, the metric unit is (g).

Here is the formula of Mass

 t
/1000        (       )     x 1000
 kg
/1000        (        )    x 1000
 g
/1000        (        )     x 1000
mg

Here are few examples of Mass equations

34 g convert to mg

= 34000 mg

9090 kg to t

= 9.09 t

See? It's that simple!

Now let's move on to Length.

Length is a measure from one end to another. It is easy identify length especially when everything ends with Metre. Like, kilometre, metre, centimetre and millimetre! Those are all related to Length.

The principle metric unit for length is (m)

Here is the formula of Length.

 km
/1000        (       )     x 1000
 m
/100      (        )    x 100
 cm
/10        (        )     x 10
mm

Here are few examples of Length equations!

Convert 5 m to cm

5 x 100= 500 cm

Convert 10576 m to km

10576/1000 = 10.576 km

And lastly, Capacity.

Capacity is mainly about the amount of something can hold. For example a glass of water, This glass has a capacity of 300 ml (but is actually holding only 160 ml.)

The principle metric unit for Capacity is l (litre)

Here is the formula or Capacity

 ml
/1000        (       )     x 1000
 kl
/100      (        )    x 100
 l
/10        (        )     x 10
ml

Here are few examples of Capacity equations!

Express 4 L in mL

1L= 1000 mL

4L= 4 x 1000mL

= 4000 mL

A diving pool contains 746 kilolitres of water. How many litres of water does the pool contain?

1 kL= 1000 L
746 kL = 746 x 1000 L
= 746 000 L

Introduction to Algebra

So, what is Algebra?

I am guessing you might heard Algebra before, perhaps secondary school? Does it ring a bell? or perhaps you are familiar with the equation involving letters like ... x, y or w or that time where you are still a wee little confused teenager who couldn't understand maths at all?

Does that seem familiar? Ina hope it does because now she will give you a recap or perhaps an introduction to what is " Algebra " !

First and foremost, Algebra. What is that name? Where does it come from?
Yes. Algebra. Algebra is actually when we use a letter to represent a value or a number.

So people are often confused as why Maths involves letter in their equation, and that Maths should stay with equations involving numbers not letters because people would get less confused. It's actually easy because it is easier to write X's than empty boxes. Ina says that is very true if you think about it. Just imagine writing, " If this empty box equals... " I wouldn't want to do that, would you?

You see in that point, Ina was very confused as well. She couldn't understand a thing or two about it but with the help of my friends, Ina did started getting motivated to learn it again.

Now Ina will provide two examples of  equations and hopefully we can solve them together, shall we? Let us try a simple and a bit of a challenging one.

Examples

The father's age is 4 times the age of his son’s now. 10 years ago, the father was 10 times as old as his son. What is the present age of the father?

Let son's age be x.
Then, father’s current age will be 4x.
Father's age 10 years ago=4x-10=10x-100
4x-10x=-100+10
-6x=-90
-x=-90/6
X=15
If son’s current age is 15,then father's age (4x)=15×4=60…
Then son's age 10 years ago was 15-10=5,
And Father's age was 60-10= 50

Are you getting it? Or are you still a bit lost? Or are you just really good at solving algebra? Well here's another one!

|-2x + 2| -3 = -3

The equation to solve is given by.
|-2x + 2| -3 = -3

Add 3 to both sides of the equation and simplify.
|-2x + 2| = 0

|-2x + 2| is equal to 0 if -2x + 2 = 0. Solve for x to obtain
x = 1

My motivation to study Maths

Image result for motivation maths

As someone who has never really been that one student who lives and breathes Maths, It was a whole other story for Ina. It has been difficult and very challenging especially when you are that type that has a hard time to catch up with numbers or word problems.

Well, In that case, here is the story of how Ina started getting motivated to study maths again.

Maths.. Ina remembers growing up and was in primary school specifically third grade when Ina was first introduced to division. Ina was a confused little girl who didn't understand why the bag has four marbles in the first place. Just with that, Ina's whole life changed. Ina didn't understand Maths at all in that point and you can see how much it proves until today.

Ina was never really good at solving word problems either. Ina has always try to outsmart the questions and solved it in a whole different way. It was like Ina was trying so hard to prove that the actual answer is wrong and Ina's was correct. Silly Ina didn't understand maths at all.

Until suddenly, Ina realised how maths really was a big part of Ina's daily life. Ina studies Business and with business, Ina also contributes to learn about Finance one day. Ina realised how Maths really does surround our daily lives. It is basically inevitable. For example, just imagine going shopping and not knowing about discounts at all. So now Ina couldn't really avoid it this time and with that it was a start of Ina's motivation to study it again.

To be fair, Ina didn't pick up the knowledge on maths that fast. It is slowly growing to Ina and she just need more time to study and work out all the things that she had missed in primary and secondary school.

A part of Ina preaches herself for writing and actually typing these words with full hope to promise to herself to pick up Maths again whilst a part of her is screaming " NO, no, no NO!! " in her head repeating almost every time.

Ina will continue to practice maths and hopefully one day, She is able to solve word problems the correct way and not outsmart them!

Get to know Ina

So, Welcome to Ina's first blog post.

Let us bring it back to 20th December 2000, A little girl named Daffina Affina Binti Haji Hidup was born on 12.00 AM.

Supposedly on 19th, but I guess this girl wanted 20th to be the date! Even her parents decided that her birthday will be on the 20th but her identity card and birth certificate stated 19th. Oh well, Ina couldn't even decide which one will be her birthday.

Fast forward to growing up and going to her first primary school. She was a total bundle of joy, She loved school and all of her friends until one day she moved houses somewhere in Rimba. She left her best friends and even her favourite teachers.

Her time during her primary and secondary school wasn't the best, considering she dealt with a lot of pressure and always being insecure about herself when it comes to studying and how she looked. Most of her friends graduated with excellent grades and there she was standing with her certificate hiding it from people and mostly embarrassed when asked how she did during the O'Level exam. Nonetheless, She has recovered from that experience and this will be the start of her new journey.

College.

Yes, College. It was one of those times where everyone was already busy with where they wanted to go. Most of her friends were working and some continued to study. Ina didn't know where she wanted to go. Her parents asked if she could go to IBTE and pursue a course of her liking, so she applied for IBTE and waited for her acceptance email to go for an interview. In the mean time, she was still considering going to different college since IBTE was never really her first choice from the beginning.

She eventually found two college of her choice, It was either Laksamana College of Business or Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology. The one that really called for her was Cosmopolitan College. She loved how they focused on three different courses that are really important especially in this generation. She immediately applied for BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Business with no hesitation.

After four months in college, she managed to make new friends and friendly lecturers. So far her life is going better than ever and she wishes for that journey to stay longer.
